A Pre-Sea Medical Examination is conducted before an individual embarks on a seafaring career. Its primary objective is to ensure that only those who are physically and mentally fit are allowed to begin training for employment at sea, thereby preventing unsuitable candidates from entering the profession. This examination is typically more stringent, as it is often a one-time assessment before a seafarer’s career begins
Flag medicals refer to medical examinations that comply with the requirements of a ship’s flag state—the country under whose laws the ship is registered. Each flag state may have specific medical standards, but most adhere to international conventions such as the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006, and the STCW Convention, 1978 (as amended). Only doctors authorized by the flag state can conduct these examinations, and the resulting medical certificate is necessary for seafarers to serve on ships flying that flag.
